Has Dad 7 the ability to distinguish (區(qū)別) between a man and an animal? I was 8 enough about this. So one day I gathered my 9 and asked him. "Dad, do you know you talk to that dog of yours just like to a human being?" Dad looked me 10 in the eye. I thought he might be 11 at my question. But he just smiled, reached out and patted my head and said, "Yes I do,and the reason is 12 . If I talk down to him, he doesn't 13 me but if I carry on a normal conversation, then Pluto 14 everything I say." I stood there wanting to ask more 15 , but decided that was not the best time. And so for a few days, I 16 everything I could about my father and the dog. And I know the dog never receives direct 17 . He never hears sit, lie down or anything like that. What he 18 are suggestions, "Would you like me to feed you now? Shall we go for a walk?" What's amazing is that Pluto does 19 everything Dad says. It was at her company’s annual picnic that my mother met my father, and he walked her home. The next week, from his home in Chicago, he sent her a post card: Remember me please. Do be calling you one of these days.—David.
She still has that post card. I am not sure what made her save. Though he already had his heart set on her, she hadn't chosen him yet, at least not consciously.
My father, a salesman for a big electronics company, often told us while we were growing up, it was blind luck that he was at the picnic that day. He was in town to meet with clients and happened to stop by the branch office that Saturday morning to make a call. It was the manager of a local radio station where my mother worked as a writer. “Dave! Glad you’re in town!” he said, and invited him to come right over to their annual picnic. Later my mother dated him when he was in town. Eventually, one night a few months later, she woke her mother and told her she was going to marry Dave. A few months after the wedding, my father was transferred east. They settled in New York, in the house where I grew up.
Sometimes I think how time gets us together and puts us in a certain place where we’re faced with one option or another. We leave behind while others live by the choice we made. We could have lived full of different passions and joys, different problems and disappointments. Sometimes, particularly when I came home late to a sleeping house, my husband and daughter curled around each other. I think about the lives we would not have had if choices had brought us to a different place. And I tremble at the thought that I might have missed this life, this man, this child, this love.
1.According to the text, where did the author’s parents come across?
A. At the author’s home. B. At a local radio station.
C. At her father’s company’s picnic. D. At her mother’s company’s picnic.
2.It can be inferred from the text that ________.
A. the author’s father didn’t like her mother
B. the author’s mother always made right decisions
C. the author didn’t believe her mother
D. the author’s mother hadn’t decided to marry her father at first
3.Before meeting the author's father, her mother was ________.
A. a writer B. a manager C. a teacher D. a saleswoman
4.What do we know about the author?
A. She values her life now.
B. Time makes her life now perfect.
C. She is tired of her life now.
D. Her life now faces problems and disappointments.

Ali runs a school in India. In Ali’s school the children are asked to learn everything by heart. If a child studies several years in that school, he will have to recite everything he learns there for years on end.Ali is clever in many ways.He knows how to deal with the teachers in his school and he knows how to make children obey him.But we cannot expect him to be a good teacher himself. The main cause is that he never pays any attention to teaching methods.Besides, he is not a good speaker. He often falters(結(jié)巴地講話)in his speech. But this is not always the case with Ali.When he discovers that any child in his school can’t recite a text in full, he will squint(斜著眼看)at the child, for Ali is shortsighted, and then proceed to scold the child.Ali never falters when he scolds the children.Only on such occasions is his talent in speech revealed. And very often the parents of the victim(child)turn up in Ali’s office the next day.

In Los Angeles, drivers spend sixty-one hours every year stuck in traffic. These drivers know all too well how bad the traffic can be. “There’re too many cars, and you can’t move around a lot.”
Professor Cyrus Shahabi also knows about traffic jams. He lives more than 65 kilometers from his office at the University of Southern California, in Los Angeles. He is always late even with the help of a navigation (導(dǎo)航) system. He decided to develop a program called ClearPath for that. He says his program uses historical data to predict traffic conditions even before the driver leaves the house. “What’s unique (獨(dú)特的) isthat we use a lot of data that’s currently become available including traffic data, weather data, and we analyze that so that we can predict what’s going to happen in front of you when leave home.”Professor Shahabi says his system does more than just answer current traffic conditions. With ClearPath, he says, a driver can decide what time he wants to leave, and ClearPath will give thefastest route. It looks at the entire road network, including surface streets as well as highways, before the driver hits the road. Professor Shahabi hopes to have ClearPath available nationwide and overseas once they can collect traffic data from other cities.
“I always thought that Los Angeles had the worst traffic, but now I know that Shanghai, Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo, believe it or not, Singapore, Hong Kong certainly are examples that can immediately use this.”Professor Shahabi hopes to share this new technology with companies that already have navigation systems, such as Google and Apple.

One day, Jack threw some papers on my desk. “What’s wrong?” I asked. “Next time you want to change anything, ask me first,” he said, and left. I had made just one small change. But it’s not that I hadn’t been warned. My colleagues had said he was responsible for the resignations of the two previous secretaries. As the weeks went by, I came to look down on Jack.
After another of his episodes had left me in tears I stormed into his office. “what?” he said suddenly. “Jack, the way you’ve been treating me is wrong. I’ve never had anyone speak to me that way. As a professional, it’s wrong for me to allow it to continue,” I said. Jack smiled nervously, “Susan, I make you a promise that I will be a friend. I will treat you as you deserve to be treated, with respect and kindness.”
Jack avoided me the rest of the week, and never questioned my work again. I brought cookies to the office one day and left some on his desk. Another day I left a note: ”Hope your day is going great. ” Over the next few weeks, there were no more Jack episodes. One year later
I discovered I had breast cancer, and was scared. The statistics were not great for my long-term survival.
One day, however, Jack visited me in the hospital and silently handed me a bundle with several bulbs inside. “Tulips(郁金香),” he said. I smiled, not understanding. “If you plant them when you get home, they’ll come up next spring. I think you will be there to see them when they come up. Next spring you will see the colours I picked out for you.” Tears clouded my eyes and he left. I have seen those red and white striped(有條紋的) tulips push through the soil every spring for over ten years now. This past September the doctor declared me cured. At a moment when I was praying for just the right word, a man with very few words said all the right things. After all, that’s what friends do.
1.Jack became angry that day because__________.
A. he was feeling unwell
B. Susan had failed to keep his office clean
