In the most southern part of our planet, there’s a place that’s covered with snow and ice all year round. But it has the clearest and cleanest air. Amazingly, in this place, the sun sometimes hangs even in the midnight sky. This place is Antarctica (南極洲): the coldest, windiest and harshest (惡劣的) place on the Earth.
![]()
As the world’s least-known place, Antarctica is of great interest to scientists around the world. In 1983, China joined the Antarctic Treaty (《南極條約》). The treaty made Antarctica a peaceful place for member countries to do scientific research. During 30 years, China has sent many scientists to Antarctica. They mostly look at the resources under the icy land and do research about climate change and marine (海洋的) biology.
Antarctica is a place with fantastic views. However, life there is very hard. Food is one of the biggest problems. Frozen (速凍) food which can be heated easily is people’s daily food. Fresh vegetables are hard to grow in the cold weather. Therefore, scientists often eat dried or canned vegetables.
Sleep is also troublesome. In Antarctica, summer lasts from November to March. During this period, Antarctica points to the sun and receives sunlight 24 hours a day. In order to get some sleep, scientists cover the windows with black plastic cloth to create “night”.
Working in Antarctica is dangerous, especially when meeting gale-force (七級以上的) winds. Sometimes the wind is even stronger than a typhoon. It can easily blow people away. So there are ropes that connect buildings of some research stations. People can hold these ropes to keep their balance in forceful winds.
What’s more, communicating with others is difficult. Without cables and Internet in some research stations, two-way radios are the only tools to communicate. If people want to say hello to friends and relatives, they can use satellite phones.
Although it is challenging to work in Antarctica, scientists’ passion to learn about this mysterious land will never end. It is hopeful that one day they will step every corner of this icy land.
1.From Paragraph 1, we learn that the Antarctica ______.
A. is covered with snow and ice
B. rains heavily from time to time

A. find out ways to control water pollution
B. research climate change and marine biology
C. grow plants and vegetables in special condition
D. stop the hunters from killing the marine biology
3.In order to sleep well in Antarctica, the scientists have to _____.
A. wear more clothes to keep warm
B. cover the windows with black cloth
C. connect research stations with ropes
D. eat more fried and canned vegetables
4.We can replace (替換) the underlined word passion in the last paragraph with .

YUXI, China — Many people of this city in southwester China spent Saturday night in tents, too scared to sleep in their homes after an earthquake which killed 188 people early that morning.
Countless homes were destroyed and lots of people became homeless after the earthquake which is believed to have a magnitude of 7.
The quake was not as serious as the 7.9-magnitude earthquake in 2008 that left more than 70,000 people dead in the Wenchuan area. But villagers who work in Chengdu, about 100 miles away, hurried back home Sunday morning, many on foot, the lucky ones on motorbikes, to check on their homes.
Song Yuanqing, 43, a worker, arrived back after a 22-hour trip and found his house was still there but had already been very unstable(搖搖欲墜). “We would like to do something, but we can’t do anything,” Mr. Song said as he sat with neighbors around an outdoor fire built by the village leader in his backyard.
In all, the government sent about 7,000 soldiers and People’s Armed Police officers to the earthquake-hit area. By Saturday evening, there were so many rescue workers in the area that the government asked volunteers to stop coming.
Li Keqiang, China’s prime minister, flew to the area and slept in a tent on Saturday evening in Lushan County.
The earthquake shook Sichuan Province at 8 a.m., when people were getting up a little later than usual because schools and universities were closed.
“We were just getting up and getting dressed in our dormitory when the building shook, and I looked outside from our window and saw a row of houses had collapsed,” Xu Yan, 22, a student at the Agricultural University in Ya’an, said in a telephone interview. “I had never flew down the stairs faster.”
The Chinese government said early Sunday that the death toll was 174, and about 5,700 people had been injured.
The earthquake was also felt in Chengdu, one of China’s biggest cities and the capital of Sichuan Province. People described water getting out of home aquariums and things like balls falling to the floor.
In the town of Longmen, another hard-hit area near Ya’an, a local man, Zhang Yan, said 90 percent of the buildings had collapsed.
“About 100 people died around here,” Ms. Zhang said in a telephone interview. “Rescue teams have not yet arrived. There is no water or electricity.”
In the 2008 quake, many schools of poor quality collapsed and killed thousands of students. This time, many people also expressed their worries about students on their micro-blogs.
Sichuan Province is also one of China’s best-known hometowns for pandas, and at the Bifengxia reserve, about six miles north of Ya’an, workers said that 20 pandas in the park were safe. “We examined the panda area after the quake, and they were not affected,” said Chen Yong, an officer of the reserve.
【小題1】When did the quake take place in Ya’an? On_______________________.
| A.Saturday morning | B.Sunday morning |
| C.Saturday night | D.Sunday night |
| A.They wanted to provide rescue to the hit area and give other people a helping hand as volunteers. |

Have you ever dreamed of visiting a planet in the Milky Way? While the trip sounds exciting, it would take years and years to reach the place that we are going to. So in the future, bedtime for astronauts may be more than a few hours of regular shut-eye. They would have to sleep for years.
European researchers are now doing hibernation experiments. The study may help them understand whether humans could ever sleep through the years it would take for a space flight to distant planets. “If there was an effective technology, it could make deep-space travel come true,” said Mark Ayer of the European Space Agency last month.
What seems like science fiction is not completely impossible. Researchers have been able to use chemicals to put living cells into a sleep-like state where they don’t age. They have now moved on to small, non-hibernating mammals like rats. The results will be out soon.
A major challenge is the fact that cells can be very simple systems, but body organs are far more complex(復雜的).
“It's like moving from a simple Apple computer to a supercomputer,” said Marco Biggiogera, a hibernation researcher at Italy’s University of Pavia.
Just like bears and frogs, the hibernation of human beings would cause a person’s metabolism (新陳代謝) to lower so they would need less energy.
Medical research, however, is just half of a space flight hibernation system.
There is the challenge of designing a suitable protective place to live. Such a place would provide the proper environment for hibernation, such as the proper temperature. It would also have to monitor (監(jiān)控) life functions and serve the physiological needs of the hibernator.
According to Ayer, the six-person Human Outer Planets Exploration Mission to Jupiter’s moon (木星的衛(wèi)星) Callisto, could be an opportunity to use human hibernation. The mission aims to send six humans on a five-year flight to Callisto, where they will spend 30 days, in 2045.
