People cry when they feel very sad. They cry when something terrible happens, like a death in the family. They cry when they feel very sad or very angry, they cry when they know they cannot do anything about a problem, and they feel helpless.
They also cry when they feel very good. They cry when they have been very worried about something but find out everything is all right. They cry when something wonderful happens.
In the United States until lately, men were not supposed to cry. Crying was weak and only for women. Men were supposed to be strong. But things are changing. Men are beginning to realize that it is all right to show their feelings. Women are learning that sometimes they can do something about a problem instead of just crying. They try not to cry in a public place or in front of a frightened child.
Chemists have been studying why people cry. They say the body produces two kinds of tears. One kind cleaned out the eye if it gets dirt in it. But when people cry because of their feelings, these tears have poison chemicals in them. The body is getting rid of chemicals produced by strong feeling.
In the United States men have heart disease more often than women do. Doctors say heart disease and some other are connected with the pressures of living and working in a modern society. Perhaps men suffer more from these disease because they do not cry enough. And it is possible that as more and more women work outside the home, they will also suffer from more pressures. Then everyone will need to cry more.

Frequently hearing the phrase “thank you” or “well done” means the same to staff as a modest pay rise, researchers say.
Praise and encouragement also makes employees more likely to work hard and stay in their jobs, saving on the cost of finding replacements.
A third of 1,000 workers surveyed by consulting firm White Water Strategies said they did not get thanked at all when they did well—and a further third said they were not thanked enough.
In both cases, staff said they felt undervalued, meaning they were less likely to exert themselves and were more likely to look for employment elsewhere.
The net result is around £5.2 billion in lost productivity from employees who would raise their game if they felt more appreciated,White Water claimed According to the company, praising staff has the same motivational kick as a 1 per cent pay rise—and works out much cheaper for bosses.
Three out of four employees said that regular acknowledgement by their boss was important to them, but only a quarter said they were actually given as much praise as they felt they needed.
The survey found that those in blue-collar and manual jobs were less likely to be given any recognition for doing well.

People have often wondered about Margaret Thatcher’s famous claim that she only needed four hours of sleep a night. People were amazed that former British Prime Minister had managed to run the country on so little sleep. Most people need at least seven or eight hours rest every night.
But now scientists have discovered a gene(基因)that affects the amount of sleep we need and which allows some people to survive on fewer hours. They found a mother and a daughter who have a rare gene that allows them to sleep less than the rest of their family —but still feel alert during the day. The pair managed to stay alert on about six hours sleep a night, two hours less than the rest of their family needs.
The finding, published in Science magazine, offers a new direction for studies on how sleep affects health. Experts say adults need seven to nine hours of sleep for good health, while teenagers and kids need more. People who don’t get enough sleep are more likely to get sick and suffer from memory loss.
In 2001,scientists at the University of California discovered a mutation(突變)in a gene that causes people with that gene to have very unusual sleeping patterns. These people go to bed around 7:30 pm and wake around 3:30 am.
Now the team has found a gene that affects how long a person can stay asleep. In the family they studied, the 69-year-old mother and her 44-year-old daughter usually went to bed around 10 pm. The mother woke up around 4 am, and her daughter woke up around 4:30 am. Both of them felt fully rested.
Blood tests showed the women have a mutation in a gene named DEC2, which regulates the body’s clock.
Researcher Ying-Hui Fu bred(培育) mice and fruit flies to carry the mutation. The flies and mice with the mutation slept less than ordinary flies and mice, and needed less time to recover from little sleep.
64. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Less sleep does not affect people’s health.
B. Different people have different sleeping patterns.
C. New measures can reduce the effect of less sleep on health.
D. The hours we need to sleep may be affected by some gene in our body.
65. The underlined word “alert” in Paragraph 4 is similar in meaning to .
| A. comfortable | B. wide awake | C. quite alive | D. sleepy |
66. In the study, the mother and the daughter .
A. were found to have a mutation in the gene DEC2
B. were asked to sleep less than other family members
C. had the same sleeping pattern as other family members
D. suffered from memory loss for sleeping only six hours a night
67. According to the passage, the new finding can help .
A. recover memory loss
B. cure sleeping problems
C. get rid of mice and fruit flies more easily
D. explain why some people need less sleep to feel fully rested

The key to getting along with others is good communication skills. Communication is one of the biggest challenges in relationships between men and women. Researchers say that the main problem is different communication styles. Men and women have very different communication styles. 1. .
Men's communication style is more direct. They usually take a direct approach to a problem and suggest a solution. Men often make decisions more quickly than women. Rather than talk about how he feels, often a man would express his love by buying the woman cosmetics (化妝品), or bringing home a flower, or giving up the control of the remote (遙控器).
And when men do talk, they’d prefer to talk about actions rather than emotions. For example, a lot of men would choose to express their long-range faith in a relationship by talking about next summer’s vacation plans, not by starting a conversation about undying love.
Men just prefer to say their plans with plane tickets, rather than poetry. It’s one of the reasons why men are more comfortable talking at work (the practical world) than they are at home (the castle that emotion built). But you can bring out his great communicator by making him feel more like he’s operating in the work mode, even when the topic at hand is your love life.
When men talk less and women want more, the conflict can escalate. Like when a policeman is questioning an unwilling witness, more silence equals more questions. A full 65 percent of men we surveyed recently told us that they don’t want their partners to ask them more questions about themselves.
It’s clear that some men are just tired of feeling like they’re on the witness stand. They’re not necessarily hiding anything; many men simply prefer not to have to tell confusing feelings that they may not even understand themselves.
An age-old method can make things better: back off a little, give him room to operate in a conversation, and he’s more likely to open up.
