Wearing ties was originally the mark of Britain’s most powerful classes, which made the tie itself a symbol of power and respect. And that led it to be adopted by a much larger tribe-the business tribe.

You cannot wear a tie if you work with machinery. So wearing a tie became a sign that you were a man who used your brain to make a living, rather than your hands. It showed you were serious. It showed you were a professional. It meant that everyone who wanted a job in business had to wear one. It was just impossible to take seriously a man who didn’t wear a piece of colored silk around his neck.

This is how millions of people came to be wearing ties across the world. They are part of the uniform of business.

“Ties offer a point of indifference,” says John Milne, head of the British Guide of Tie Makers, “They give a chance to say something about their own personality.”

So if you happen to meet a man with a very brightly colored tie, there is a good chance that he is the office joker. There is also a good chance that he will be wearing brightly colored socks.

Is there a future for ties? The signs are not promising. Tie wearing seems to be rare among the new bread of entrepreneurs(創(chuàng)業(yè)者) in the Internet and new technology industries. Many political leaders, including former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, now go without ties. This shows they are men of the people-but not the people wearing ties.

Up until around 1960, it was common for men across the western world to wear hats as part of their business uniform. That changed with the election of John F. Kennedy to the presidency of the United States. Kennedy never wore a hat-in fact his nickname was “hatless Jack”. Seeing that the most powerful man in the world did not have to wear a hat, millions of other men decided that they did not have to, either. Hats simply vanished across the Western world. Perhaps “tieless Tony” (former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair) will have the same effect as “hatless Jack”.

66.In Britain, ties were first used as a sign to show a person’s __________.

       A.personality       B.social position  C.wearing style    D.favorite hobby

67.In the business world, wearing a tie was necessary because _________.

A.it showed you used your brain       B.it showed you got a good salary

C.it showed you were an employer    D.it showed you were well-equipped

68.The underlined word “vanished” in this passage may mean _________.

       A.sold  B.washed     C.a(chǎn)ppeared   D.disappeared

69.The writer may hold the opinion that _____________.

A.Blair is the best leader in the world

B.Kennedy is the best leader in the world

C.millions of people will go to work without a tie

D.people will wear hats instead of ties

70.Which of the following statements is TURE according to the passage?

A.If you are a professional, you can’t wear a tie in Britain

B.The tie will become more fashionable and popular in the future

C.It was the election of John F.Kennedy to the presidency of the United States that changed the fact that wearing hats as part of their business uniform

Bai Yansong, a famous anchor of China Central Television, voiced his support to students wearing green scarves at a primary school in Xi'an by wearing a green tie on a TV program, Oct 19, 2011.

The program focused on a recent controversial issue, triggered by First Experimental Primary School in Northwestern China's Xi'an that made children whose schoolwork and general behavior were not yet good enough to wear green scarves instead of the red scarf of the Chinese Young Pioneers.

The practice that divided students into "good" and "bad" has aroused a lot of discussions on Sina Weibo, a Chinese twitter-like microblogging website.

"The Chinese version of Steve Jobs has died in primary school because his pride has been hurt by the green scarf, " said another blogger.

"It is an absolute discrimination against children, " said yet another.

"Seeing the students in Xi'an wearing green scarves reminds me of some miserable memories.I cannot forget that I was the second group to wear a red scarf in my class.I cannot forget the scar on my hand left by my Chinese teacher. And I cannot forget that my math teacher threw my test paper on the ground and insisted that it was copied, " a blogger with the username Kivalailai recalled.

"The green scarves will cast a shadow over the students and bring them inferiority or jealousy, which are quite bad for their mental health, " said a blogger.

The school has halted the use of green scarves as on Wednesday, parent-teacher meetings were held to explain the situation, according to teachers at the school.

There are house-masters to take care of students all the time, especially after school hours.

Everyone knows the smart black – and – white dog that sits on top of a red doghouse with his best friend – a bird called Woodstock.

Created by the American cartoonist Charles Schluz in 1950, the clever dog is loved by generations of kids and adults. He speaks more than 20 languages and appears daily in 26,000 newspapers around the world.

When Snoopy first appeared, he was not different from other pet dogs. But two years later, he had begun to speak with simple words and sounds. By 1957 he could walk onto legs and was going to school with his master, Charlie Brown, who failed in just about everything. Later he learned to use the typewriter.

Snoopy has done lots of jobs. He has been a bow – tie wearing lawyer, a tennis player and Olympic figure skater, a world famous grocery checkout clerk, a pilot and even the first astronaut on the moon.

However, Snoopy has always dreamed of being a famous writer. The beginning of his story is always, “It was a dark and stormy night…” Unfortunately for him no one has ever wanted to publish the story.

In love, Snoopy is as much of a failure as Charlie Brown is at baseball. He easily falls in love but always has his heart broken. He eats to gorged, but it never works.

Snoopy is an insightful (有洞察力的), feel – good and sometimes sad dog. If you think a little about his words, you might find them full of life lessons. Among his most famous lines are “To live is to dance, to dance is to live.” And “Yesterday I was a dog. Today I’m a dog. Tomorrow I’ll probably still be a dog. Sigh!
