Now I'm studying in the US, I find there are some differences between schools in the US and in
Vietnam.
One big difference is the clothes students wear at school and how they look. In my country, all the
students should wear uniforms when they go to school. Boys aren't allowed to have long hair. Girls aren't
allowed to have long or colored nails (指甲).
Another difference is about the rules for parents. In Vietnam, when we begin a new year, our parents
have to go to a meeting in our class. If they don't go to that meeting, their children won't have a grade or
a report card from school.
However, in the US, there aren't such strict rules above.
In Vietnam, a class is only 45 minutes and we have only five classes each weekday. When the bell
rings, all the students just sit in their classroom. They can't move to a different room, but students can in
the US.
In Vietnam, students can't go to work because they can't find a job if they're under 18. But in the
US, many students work after school. This helps them make money. More importantly, this helps them
become more independent. They're able to do things by themselves in their own way, without asking
other people for help.

A. America.
B. The UK.
C. China.

2. What are the girl students allowed to in the writer's country?
A. To have long nails.
B. To color their nails.
C. To grow their hair long.

3. What does the underlined word "independent" mean in Chinese?

when I was a student. My interests are changing all the time with my age.
I used to like reading story books. I wasn't interested in music at all and seldom talked with my
workmates when I began to work. But now my hobbies are listening to music, chatting on the Internet,
and often telling jokes in the office. I used to know little about sports. But now I like watching all kinds
of sports games with my wife, so I know a lot of news and knowledge about sports.

In northern China during spring big sandstorms often make trouble for people. Sandstorms usually
happen in spring. They have happened in more than 10 provinces in northern China this year. People in
southern China don't have to worry about this kind of bad weather. Most of the sand comes from the north
of China. In northern China, lots of places have few trees and don't get much rain. People there have been
cutting down too many trees. Where there aren't many trees, the ground can't keep enough water. Over
the years, the ground dries up and turns into sand. When spring comes and the ice melts, the ground
becomes loose (松的), and then strong winds take the loose sand into the sky.
Sandstorms are bad for people's health. If people breathe too much sand, they could cough or have a
asthma (氣喘). Sandstorms also bring farmers lots of problems. Sometimes their sheep get lost in the storms
and can't get back home. The winds also tear farmer's houses down.
What can you do to stop sandstorms? Here's an idea-ask your parents to help you plant some trees this
spring. If you see people cutting down too many trees, tell them about the dangers of sandstorms and ask
your government to stop them.
1. Sandstorms usually happen in ______ China in ______.
