　　It was the summer of 1965．DeLuca, then 17, visited Peter Buck, a family friend．Buck asked DeLuca about his plans for the future．“I’m going to college, but I need a way to pay for it,” DeLuca recalls saying．“Buck said ‘you should open a sandwich shop．’”

　　That afternoon, they agreed to be partners．And they set a goal：to open 32 stores in ten years．After doing some research, Buck wrote a check for ＄1,000．DeLuca rented a storefront(店面)in Connecticut, and when they couldn’t cover their start-up costs, Buck kicked in another ＄1,000．

　　But business didn’t go smoothly as they expected．DeLuca says, “After six months, we were doing poorly, but we didn’t know how badly, because we didn’t have any financial controls．” All he and Buck knew was that their sales were lower than their costs．

　　DeLuca was managing the store and going to the University of Bridgeport at the same time．Buck was working at his day job as a nuclear physicist in New York．They’d meet Monday evenings and brainstorm ideas for keeping the business running．“We convinced ourselves to open a second store．We figured we could tell the public．‘We are so successful, we are opening a second store．’” And they did –in the spring of 1966．Still, it was a lot of learning by trial and error．

　　But the partners’ learn-as-you-go approach turned out to be their greatest strength．Every Friday, DeLuca would drive around and hand-deliver the checks to pay their suppliers．“It probably took me two and a half hours and it wasn’t necessary, but as a result, the suppliers got to know me very well, and the personal relationships established really helped out．” DeLuca says．

　　And having a goal was also important．“There are so many problems that can get you down．You just have to keep working toward your goal．” DeLuca adds．

　　DeLuca ended up founding Subway sandwich, the multimillion-dollar restaurant chain．

　　Beijing－(13, July)China sent up a new data relay satellite(數(shù)據(jù)中繼衛(wèi)星), Tianlian I-02, on Monday at the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre in South-western Sichuan province．The new satellite will promote the country's satellite communication network for space docking(對(duì)接)．

　　The satellite was launched on a Long-March-3C carrier rocket at 11∶41 p. m., sources at the centre told Xinhua News Agency．The satellite separated from the rocket 26 minutes after its launch and was then successfully delivered into a geostationary transfer orbit(地球同步轉(zhuǎn)移軌道)．

　　Developed by the China Academy of Space Technology under the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, the satellite is the country's second data relay satellite．The first, Tianlian I-01, was launched on April 25.2008．

　　The two satellites will form a network to improve communications between China's spacecraft and bases on Earth, according to the centre．They will also be used to help the nation's first space docking, scheduled for the second half of this year．

　　As planned, China will launch space module Tiangong-I, which was designed as a platform that will dock with an unmanned spaceship, Shenzhou, for the county's first space-docking mission this year．

　　Two more Shenzhou spaceships will dock with Tiangong-I next year, and one will be manned by two or three astronauts, according to China Manned Space Engineering Office, which was the main user of the Tianlian I series data relay satellites．

　　“The new satellite can cover a greater area to track and command the country’s space vehicles in low-Earth orbits, such as manned spacecraft and remote sensing satellites, from a higher position in outer space．Only three satellites of this kind are needed to form a global communication network, and China has two now．” Pang Zhihao, a researcher and deputy editor-in-chief of Space International, said．

　　The satellite could also equip astronauts with real-time communications, which will benefit the country's future manned space flights, he said．

　　One of India's top engineering schools has restricted Internet access in its boarding houses, saying addiction to surfing, gaming and blogging was affecting students' performance, making them lonely and even suicidal．

　　Authorities at the best Indian Institute of Technology(IIT)in Mumbai said students had stopped socializing and many were late for morning classes or slept through them．"Now, a student doesn't even know who lives two doors away from him because he is so busy on the Internet," said Prakash Gopalan, dean of student affairs．"The old dormitory culture of companionship and socializing among students is gone．This is not healthy in our opinion．"

　　IIT-Mumbai, with about 5,000 students, is one of seven IITs across India which are considered to be among the finest engineering schools in the world．They are also a talent pool for global technology giants．But their hard courses, tough competition and lonely campus lifestyle have taken an effect on students．Depressive and dysfunctional(不正常的)lifestyles are known to be common among IIT students, and at least nine have committed suicide in the past five years．Students have unlimited free Internet access in their boarding houses to help them in their studies, but many also use it to surf, chat, download movies and music, blog and for gaming．

　　Starting Monday, Internet access will be banned between 11 p. m. and 12.30 p. m. at IIT-Mumbai's 13 boarding buildings to encourage students to sleep early and to try and force them out of their "shells," Gopalan said．But the move has not gone down well with students who say they hate their lives being regulated．"Now they will say we need to listen to a lullaby(搖籃曲)to go to sleep," said Rajiv, an electronics student．

　　Early on Saturday morning, one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded hit central Chile．The powerful quake killed more than 800 people, destroyed or badly damaged 1.5 million homes and affected almost 2 million people．

　　The 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck around 3∶34 a. m., jolting(震搖)people awake all over the country．The earthquake came from underwater, off the coast of Chile．

　　Fernando Abarzua was in one of the many buildings that collapsed(倒塌)there．“I was on the eighth floor and all of a sudden I was down here,” he said, adding that he was surprised to have escaped with no major injuries．

　　The earthquake triggered(引發(fā))a tsunami that swept across the Pacific Ocean, setting off warnings in 53 countries．In the end, the tsunami's waves caused major damage and several deaths in Chile but nowhere else．

　　Dozens of aftershocks, or smaller earthquakes, rattled(使顫動(dòng))the area in the days following Saturday's massive quake．

　　Chile has a history of earthquakes．The largest recorded earthquake in the world－a 9.5-magnitude quake－struck the country in May 1960．Since 1973, there have been 13 quakes there with a magnitude of at least 7.0．As a result, Chile's newer buildings were built to withstand(經(jīng)受住)the shocks．

　　That is one reason that Chile's quake－though 500 times stronger－h(huán)as caused much less damage than the earthquake that struck Haiti in January．

　　On Sunday, Bachelet ordered troops in Chile to help hand out food, water and blankets and to clear rubble(瓦礫堆)from the roads．Temporary hospitals were planned for the hardest-hit areas．

　　She later requested help from the international community．On Monday, the United Nations prepared earthquake relief efforts as well as 30 tons of food and other help．

　　Even before Bachelet's request, President Obama announced that the U．S．was prepared to help．“The United States stands ready to assist in the rescue and recovery efforts,” he said．

　　We asked for the bill, expecting not to pay for my wife’s meal．Nobody came．After 15 minutes, I asked to see the manager．The head waiter told us that you were on holiday．I complained again about the horrible cockroach．He told me Janet had finished work．He didn’t believe my story and gave me a bill for three meals．I argued with him but was forced to pay．

　　The waitress, Janet, was always friendly, but I would like an apology from your impolite head waiter and a full refund for our meal．It cost ＄ 68．Until then, I will not be eating at your restaurant or recommending it to anyone．

　　“In America, Thanksgiving is celebrated every year at the end of November．It is to remember the first group of people from Europe to live in America．When they first arrived, they found the environment strange．But they learned to survive after some native American friends showed them how to grow and find food．Thanksgiving is meant to be a traditional celebration．”

　　“Thanksgiving is the first day of Christmas shopping．That means we have four weeks to buy Christmas presents for our families and friends．For me and my friends, the most important part of the festival is the big football game on TV．The match is watched by millions of people all over America．Thanksgiving is seen as an exciting day for football!”

　　In Canada, Thanksgiving is held on the 2nd Monday in October．On the Sunday before Thanksgiving Day, many people go to church．Thanks is given for all the good things that happened to them during the year．I always give thanks for the nice big turkey I’m going to have at the family dinner! Like all festivals, Thanksgiving is about food!

　　On Thanksgiving Day, we have dinner with all our cousins, aunts and uncles．It is always very busy．Sometimes we have two Thanksgiving dinners because we go to both our grandparents’ houses．The dinner is usually attended by more than twenty people at each house! My mother and my aunts do all the cooking but the washing-up is done by me and my cousins．And that’s not an easy job! But I don’t mind because Thanksgiving is meant to be a time to give thanks．

　　I arrived at my mother's home for our Monday family dinner．The smells of food flew over from the kitchen．Mother was pulling out quilt(被子)after quilt from the boxes, proudly showing me their beauties．She was preparing for a quilt show at the Elmhurst Church．

　　When we began to fold and put them back into the boxes, I noticed something at the bottom of one box．I pulled it out．“What is this?” I asked．

　　“Oh?” Mom said, “That's Mama's quilt．”

　　I spread the quilt．It looked as if a group of school children had pieced(拼湊)it together; irregular designs, childish pictures, a crooked line on the right．

　　“Grandmother made this?” I said, surprised．My grandmother was a master at making quilts．This certainly didn't look like any of the quilts she had made．

　　“Yes, right before she died．I brought it home with me last year and made some changes,” she said．“I'm still working on it．See, this is what I've done so far．”

　　I looked at it more closely．She had made straight a crooked line．At the center of the quilt, she had stitched(縫)a piece of cloth with these words：“My mother made many quilts．She didn't get all lines straight．But I think this is beautiful．I want to see it finished．Her last quilt．”

　　“Ooh, this is so nice, Mom,” I said．It occurred to me that by completing my grandmother's quilt, my mother was honoring her own mother．I realized, too, that I held in my hands a family treasure．It started with the loving hands of one woman, and continued with the loving hands of another．

　　Leadership actually has a few simple concepts．And, I witnessed it just the other day．I have three children, all under the age of nine．Before the bus arrives at eight in the morning, I always make breakfast and arrange their backpacks．

　　But last Monday, I couldn’t get out of bed because I was sick．I thought that my husband, Chris, would handle the children．But I immediately realized that he wasn’t at home．If I’d had the strength, I would have ordered my nine-year-old daughter to help me．I was too exhausted even for that．I’m embarrassed to say － I just fell back to sleep．

　　When I opened my eyes again, the children were in front of me．Dressed．All three of them．Even though I was sick, I was suspicious(猜疑的)．“What’s going on?” I asked．

　　My nine-year-old, Sally, spoke for the group, “We made you a cup of green tea．Don’t worry．I didn’t turn on the stove; I used the microwave．” I cautiously accepted the offer, wondering what they wanted．“I heard you throwing up in the bathroom so I got everyone ready．We still have 10 minutes to get to the bus．” Sally continued．

　　What had happened to the daughter I had to force to get ready every morning? And how did she manage to motivate an eight-year-old and a three-year-old?

　　The next day, I told Chris what I had witnessed．He just said, “Our daughter is a natural-born leader．” I didn’t think so．“For a leader she is a terrible follower．”

　　Then it occurred to me that：a good leader isn’t a great follower．In fact, leadership is all about not waiting for instructions．It’s about stepping up to the challenge and leading by example－exactly what Sally had done．I had this leadership thing all wrong．

　　Without being forced, without even being asked, she stepped up．I don’t think I would have believed it if I hadn’t seen it for myself．
