October 31st is Halloween．During this holiday, people wear special costumes with masks．You can see pumpkin lanterns everywhere．It is not very easy to carve(雕刻)a lantern out of a pumpkin．
First you have to wash a pumpkin because there is dirt on it．Then open the top and scoop out(舀出)the inside．It is not an easy job．It may take you two hours to take out all the inside with a big knife．What you do next is to cut three triangles(三角形)in the side．Two triangles will be eyes, and the other for a nose．And at the bottom cut out a mouth．At last you can put a candle or a lamp inside and take the lantern outside．
These days a lot of houses don't carve lanterns．They just buy fake(假的)ones．They are cheap and a fake lantern doesn't go bad．However I never buy one, because I think it fun to make the real thing．
