My grandmother always said, “Can’t never could until he tried.” My mother took up this mantra and recited it to me many times during my childhood. She normally used it to try and push me into doing something I didn’t want to do. It was like waving a red flag in front of a bull. Annoying as it was, it took root.
Many years ago, my husband was downsized out of his job, leaving us with a single income—mine. We were a two-income family with two-income bills and two children to support. He had been given generous severance pay, but that money would only last so long. Just when it looked like things couldn’t get any worse, they did. I lost my job too.
While my husband was out pounding the pavement, knocking on doors, making calls and scanning the papers for another job, I stayed at home and did my best to figure out how to make the most of every cent. It was often difficult to maintain a hopeful, positive attitude, but we did our best.
Anxious about our situation, I tried to think of something that I could do to earn some money. Even a little would help. One day I had lunch with a former coworker who insisted that I would be great at teaching computer classes. I had used word processing software extensively at my former job and was definitely an expert, but could I sell that skill? Was it possible that people would actually pay me to teach them? The only teaching I had ever done was in a volunteer teaching program. I remembered my mother’s mantra—Can’t never could until he tried.
Para. 1: Recalling my volunteer teaching experience, I contacted the community.
Para. 2: To my surprise, my computer class was in great demand.
答案:Recalling my volunteer teaching experience, I contacted the community. Fortunately, I received an immediate and enthusiastic response. For days I prepared in every detail, rehearsing lessons aloud in the empty living room, my voice growing steadier with each repetition. When the first class began, I saw my own nervousness reflected in the students' faces. But as I guided them through opening their first document, their concentrated expressions slowly softened into smiles of triumph. At that moment, I felt my mother’s mantra turned from a childhood annoyance into a profound truth.
To my surprise, my computer class was in great demand. Seeing the growing need for digital skills, I developed an online course mainly teaching the elderly how to use computers and the Internet. With more and more people registering for my course, the additional income helped stabilize our family’s finances and I gradually found myself immersed in the interest of education which became my lifelong career ultimately. What began as a desperate attempt to survive became a journey of self-discovery. I had tried despite my fears, and in doing so, I realized I could not only endure but thrive.
