Paper-cut is a Chinese folk art with a long history. In 2002, UNESCO listed China's paper-cuts as the world cultural heritage (遺產(chǎn)). In Chinese culture, paper-cuts are the symbol of happiness and good luck. They are mainly used for decoration.
Paper-cuts are put up on the windows or doors during holidays in China. There are many kinds of paper-cuts. Some are animal images and some are Chinese characters. The image of a baby on an animal is popular. The animal is called "qi lin". People think it has the power to bring children to the family. The Chinese character "Fu" means good luck. It is often stuck upside down on front doors. It means happiness arrives. There are many other popular paper-cuts:
"yu" (fish) have a harvest (豐收)
"shou" (壽) best wishes for elderly (長輩)
"xi" (囍) happiness for couples (新婚夫婦)
Paper-cuts are made by hand. All need a pair of scissors or a knife and a piece of paper. When making paper-cuts, you should be careful and patient. Even a small mistake during the process can ruin (毀掉) the whole piece of work. But it is easy to learn. Do as the following steps:
